What does R-value actually mean, and how is wall insulation specified?

Insulation is sold and specified by R-value — a measure of resistance to heat flow. Higher R means the material slows heat transfer more. It's roughly additive: layers of insulation stack their R-values, which is why proposals read like sums. Two things make wall insulation more confusing than attic insulation: you can't see inside a finished wall, and the wall cavity itself limits how much you can put in.

The cavity sets the ceiling

A standard 2x4-framed wall has about three and a half inches of cavity depth; a 2x6 wall has about five and a half. Since each insulation material delivers a certain R per inch, the framing largely dictates the maximum cavity R-value — you can't stuff R-30 into a 2x4 wall no matter what the bag says. That's why deep-energy retrofits sometimes add rigid insulation outside the sheathing: it's the only way to raise R past what the cavity allows, and it also blankets the framing itself, which conducts heat right past the insulation between studs (the "thermal bridging" a contractor may mention).

How much R your walls should have depends on your climate zone. Rather than quoting numbers that vary by region and get revised over time, go straight to the federal reference: ENERGY STAR's Seal and Insulate Your Home program publishes recommended insulation levels by region along with the reasoning. Air sealing comes first

The consistent theme in the ENERGY STAR guidance is that sealing air leaks and insulating go together — insulation slows heat conducted through materials, but it does little about air moving around them. A wall with good batts and leaky top plates, outlets, and rim joists still bleeds conditioned air. In practice this means the cheap, unglamorous work — caulk, foam, gaskets — belongs in the scope before or alongside the insulation itself, and a proposal that never mentions air sealing is missing half the job.

Air sealing has a second benefit worth knowing about: air leaking through wall assemblies carries water vapor with it, and moisture inside wall cavities is exactly what the EPA's moisture guidance warns against. Retrofit options for a finished wall

If your exterior walls are already closed up, the common approaches, in rough order of invasiveness:

  • Dense-packed loose fill (cellulose or fiberglass) blown in through small holes drilled in each stud bay, then patched. The standard "walls stay up" retrofit.
  • Injection foam, similar access, different material and cost profile.
  • Cavity insulation during a remodel — if drywall is coming off anyway for other work, batts or spray foam go in at marginal cost. This is the moment to insulate, which is why it belongs in any remodel conversation.
  • Exterior rigid insulation when residing the house — the most disruptive, and the only one that addresses thermal bridging.

One caution: drilling and patching dozens of holes in painted walls is paint-disturbing work. In a pre-1978 home, that brings the federal RRP lead-safe rules into play — ask any insulation contractor about certification before they drill. And once the holes are patched, judging the finish work is the same skill as judging any drywall repair.
